Managing Editor, Shows
The New York Times – New York, NY

In just two years, NYT Audio has pioneered a new form for daily news. Now we’re asking: What’s the next way we can innovate in the world of shows? We’re looking for a creative, dynamic leader who is excited to help us answer that question.

The Managing Editor, Shows will help shape the vision for NYT shows and bring those shows into the world. They will be cultivating relationships with editors and reporters across the newsroom, looking for new ideas and collaborators, piloting the most exciting opportunities, and bringing the very best of those to life. Once a show is live, the Managing Editor will be responsible for the editorial direction of the show and building out the team that runs it day to day. Then they’ll go scout and pilot the next great thing.

At the same time, they will be a creative, hands-on leader of new and existing shows, with an ability to guide and edit programming from conception to completion. They must have an eye for talent and a gift for coaching reporters to get what they need in a studio recording.

They will be a member of the leadership team for NYT Audio and will work closely with other producers and editors on the leadership team in defining the larger editorial vision and programming strategy of the team. They should also be fairly autonomous and able to move projects forward without much supervision.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading new show development, in collaboration with team leadership

  • Advising on staffing and budget required to pilot and sustain these shows

  • Meeting realistic but ambitious goals for number of shows to pilot and launch each year, and communicating regularly with team leadership about progress and hurdles

  • Developing promising NYT journalists into podcast talent and turning their stories into fully-baked podcast ideas, for an ongoing show or a limited-run series

  • Make staffing recommendations to build a diverse and talented team of producers and editors

  • Shaping direction for shows, including current ones (aside from The Daily), in collaboration with team leadership

Skills:

  • At least 7 years experience in audio production

  • Experience building and managing a team or organization

  • Proven ability to foster an inclusive, diverse, and innovative environment

  • An innovator at heart, and also able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times

  • Has a track record of making ambitious new audio shows or series and a passion for podcasts and new forms of storytelling

  • Creative ideas about how to make smart audio shows that will get listeners hooked

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Comfort assembling a session in Pro Tools is a plus

  • Collaborative spirit is a must
