Literacy Educational consultant

We currently seek exceptional educational consultants to support transformative instructional improvements in New York City public schools. This career opportunity offers the right candidates the chance to have a major impact on urban K-12 teachers and students.
Work will primarily be school-based and require intensive interaction with school leaders, teacher leaders, teachers, and students. Travel throughout Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens required.
The primary role of the Literacy Educational Consultant will be to support teachers and administrators in NYC public schools in the following key areas:
- Support teachers and school leaders in implementing culturally responsive instructional practices in the literacy classroom and deepening content knowledge and pedagogy of teachers.
- Conduct a needs analysis of schools, analyzing data, conducting instructional walks with administration, observing instruction, and reviewing curricula and materials to ensure that a diverse representation of multiple perspectives is evident.
- Develop an action plan for coaching aligned with a measurable goal for the work.
- Execute a coaching action plan, refining and revising when needed to meet the needs of the school.
- Build teachers capacity to effectively implement Common Core aligned curriculum and analyze data effectively to drive instruction.
- Differentiate teacher support based on individual needs and address needed teacher mindset shifts.
- Facilitate teacher teams reflecting on practice, analyzing data that leads to deep analysis and identification of inequitable practices in schools, and looking at student work toward the goal of improving pedagogical practices and student outcomes.
- Develop leadership skills of teacher leaders.
- Guide school leaders in making critical changes to systems, structures, and communication in their school, leading to an environment where professional collaboration is embraced and student success is the focus.
- Identify equitable and scaffolded pedagogical practices that allow for a variety of student voices in classroom practices and curricular materials.
- Recommend refinements to Teaching Matters programs in response to needs identified in schools.
- Possess the soft skills necessary for addressing mindsets relating to student achievement and opportunity.
Key Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4 years experience as a literacy coach/school leader and/or minimum of 4 years of teaching or equivalent experience in either elementary, middle, or high school grades.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving ambitious, measurable student results in literacy.
- Experience facilitating teacher teams / groups to achieve student outcomes.
- Dynamic presenter, comfortable engaging large groups of educators in professional workshops and work-sessions.
- Passion for advocating for students and communities traditionally marginalized and under-resourced.
- Demonstrated knowledge of classroom management strategies that are equitable and inclusive.
- Experience in urban schools.
- Technology skills with current computer software, including word processing and online collaboration tools.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, well organized.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills to motivate and lead others at all levels within a school.

We need special people to contribute as part of an intervention team which will deliver literacy training to schools using the latest scientifically-based reading research results through the use of assessment, professional development and classroom coaching.
Hiring Locations (You will need travel to support schools in this region: Lehigh Valley, PA
To meet this challenge, we have the following pre hiring requirements:
- Training in LETRS®, Orton-Gillingham or Lindamood-Bell® within the last five years and can provide examples of your knowledge, is a plus
- Knowledge and experience with assessment screeners such as DIBELS® Next, AimsWeb® or STAR Reading® within the past five years.
- Candidate must possess the ability to maintain a 80% regional travel schedule that likely requires overnight stays depending on your residence location. You will be required to service schools in either the Lehigh Valley OR Pittsburgh OR Ohio area depending on the location of your residence. All travel related expenses are covered by SBSL.
- 5 – 7 years teaching experience requested.
- The ability to obtain, free of any violations, Criminal Background Checks and Child Abuse Clearances
- A valid driver’s license.
- Master’s Degree (or progress toward a Degree) in education or reading related field.
- Consulting and/or training experience in the design and delivery of face-to-face or facilitator-led workshops or presentations is a plus.
- A working knowledge of Google Tools, Microsoft Office and Excel is necessary.
- Facilitation skills, in addition to professionalism and creativity.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Your Challenging Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Deliver professional development solutions using adult learning methodologies in a training environment to our Client teachers.
- Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to teachers and administrators to impact student achievement throughout the school year.
- Advise teachers and school administrators as to their “next steps” for student achievement.
- Provide reports and documentation detailing student progress.
Your Additional Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with team and partners.
- Understand and implement the work provided by leading Reading Research Professionals from around the nation.
- Support client schools and promote student success and reading achievement at local conferences.

Immediate Need: This position is a parti-time consultancy role for a specific contract in NYC. All of our consultants are potentially benefits-eligible employees of Generation Ready, not independent contractors, and are paid on a per-diem rather than salaried basis.
Responsibilities

.Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience as an education leader including Principal, Assistant Principal and/or Superintendent (not employed by the NYC DOE for at least 366 days) is preferred
- A minimum of 10 years in K-12 education as a teacher: Generation Ready’s work is based on a philosophy of best practice rather than a pre-packaged product or program, so a great depth of instructional experience is key in a consultant’s ability to customize the work for each principal, teacher and school
- Experience in a leadership role in a school, leading teams in working collaboratively to improve their practice
- A strong knowledge of leadership theory and practice
- Experience with, and understanding of, socio-economically and ethnically diverse student populations
- Experience in leading collaborative professional learning with school leaders, creating protocols, practices and structures leading to school improvement
- Demonstrated effective use and understanding of Literacy or Math Common Core State Standards and those for College and Career Readiness
