The Dean of Students at Uncommon will work with the school’s Principal and Director of Operations to ensure that all students demonstrate dramatic student achievement gains and internalize the school’s values. This individual will also help lead the school’s efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, caring, and disciplined school culture. At Uncommon Schools, the Dean of Students is the behavioral specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Dean of Students works closely with the Principal to establish a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and creative school culture
  • The Dean of Students supports teachers to hold all students to high and consistent behavioral expectations
  • The Dean of Students serves as the point person for dealing with behavioral crisis-intervention and acute behavioral issues
  • The Dean of Students acts as a resource for teachers in their instructional practice, especially as it relates to issues of discipline, relationships with students, classroom management, and school culture
  • The Dean of Students assists teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members
  • Understanding of the nuances of urban school environments and school culture
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban district or charter school setting

What you will do around here…

BASIS Independent Manhattan is a grades PreK-8 private school. As Dean of Students, you help lead the efforts to build and maintain a strong, positive achievement oriented school culture. You will manage the behavior programs for the school and establish strong, mutually respectful relationships with students and families. This position is a visible presence in all areas of the school and is responsible for all issues relating to the well-being of the students at school.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support teachers to resolve differences in communication with parents and students
  • Organize and review results of assessment of numeracy and reading comprehension and problem solving skills for any new student, state required assessments, Comprehensive or Curriculum Gains BASIS program
  • Review progress reports, mid-semester reports
  • Organize and execute student academic and behavior support

Responsibilities:

The middle school dean of students will create and implement school-wide systems and procedures that are structured, predictable, and support the school’s highly ambitious academic expectations. Additionally, the middle school dean of students will:
  • Work with the teachers to ensure a successful advisory program
  • Provide support to teachers, helping them build and create a warm, structured and responsive classroom culture
  • Reinforce and maintain the school’s culture of high academic and behavioral achievement by utilizing the Ascend philosophy that discipline is an opportunity for learning, growth, and community-building
