Watch this training video to learn two ‘high-level’ and simple strategies you can use to research job and career ideas, so you can determine which job and career ideas are worth investigating further.
130 – How To Research Job & Career Ideas (Advanced Strategies)
After completing the research strategies shown in Step 1 for all preliminary career ideas, use the more advanced research strategy shown in this video training session to further research the job and career ideas that appeal (or might appeal) to you.
The benefits of completing the research strategy discussed in this instructional video include:
- You will learn more about the typical responsibilities of each career idea so you can see if the position feels appealing to you
- You will learn more about the typical skills used in each career idea to see how well it matches your skill sets
- You will see what kinds of opportunities there are in industries / field that interest you
- You can discover new, related career ideas
By completing this research and emailing the assignments to me, we will be able to: 1) evaluate the preliminary job and career ideas; 2) identify additional job and career options; 3) discuss how you can gather any additional information you need to be confident that you are making the right career choice; and/or 4) (if it’s clear one or more of the career ideas are right for you) discuss the steps you must take to make your career transition.
140: Salary Research Tools
While salaries vary widely at different companies, here are my favorite resources to get a sense of typical salaries for jobs and careers, industries, and geographic areas you are researching:
180: Informational Interviews
An informational interview is an opportunity to gather insightful career recommendations and job search advice from qualified professionals by asking the right questions.
I highly recommend using informational interviews to ‘reality test’ your thoughts and assumptions about the different job and career options.
Unlike a job interview where a company employee asks the questions and the conversation is about the employer’s needs, in an informational interview you get to ask the questions and the focus of the conversation is about your career needs.
Informational interviews are appropriate for everyone regardless of where they are in their careers or their current employment situations.
You can use informational interviews to:
(1) Discover career options that match your skills, interests, and personality
(2) Assess career ideas
(3) Gather insider information to help you find the right job at a specific company
(4) Find unadvertised job openings that have little or no competition
(4) Get advice and recommendations on how to land a job in a specific field or industry
(5) Improve your interviewing skills and prepare for upcoming interviews
If you don’t know about informational interviews, simply do an online search of the term – many colleges have websites that discuss them in detail, including sample request letters and questions to ask at informational interviews.
I also have a free/public website with lots of great content on informational interviews. The site is www.InformationalInterviewArticles.com
Resumes, Job Search, Interviewing & More
Over the past 18+ years, I have created and polished a series of high-quality and affordable coaching products and services to help my clients make their career transition faster and easier.
These include:
- Preparing an effective resume that piques interest and wins interviews
- Preparing a LinkedIn profile that gets found by HR and recruiters
- Using job search strategies that can get interviews as fast as 1 week
- Interview preparation and strategies to convert interviews into exciting job offers
My services and products differ from other career coaches in two important ways:
Fairness:
I do not require clients to purchase a one-price, all-inclusive coaching package. I believe coaching packages offered by many career coaches are unfair to people because most people will never use all of the services included in the package and the fees are very expensive (typically $2,000 to $5,000 for a complete A to Z package of coaching services).
Instead, I offer my clients what feels to me like a very fair model – my clients choose and pay for only the coaching time and products they want from me.
Personalized Coaching:
Many coaches sell expensive coaching services but they do not also offer affordable, high-quality products.
Other coaches offer coaching products (though few are high quality – I know, I’ve spent thousands of dollars checking them out), but they do not offer affordable coaching to answer questions that you have as you use their products. Ridiculously in my opinion.
I offer both – high-quality products at affordable prices AND affordable Quick Question coaching options to answer any questions you have as you implement those product strategies in your job search/transition. It’s a powerful and extremely effective combination.
Here are the affordable ways I help my clients make a successful career transition:
