Initiate, build, and extend product assets to develop a market-based, profitable publishing program. Identify, sign, and publish new print and digital products, revitalize revisions, and extend existing assets for selected nursing course areas. Position works collaboratively with Content Project Management, Digital Publishing, Production, Marketing, and Sales personnel.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • 2 years’ experience working in strategic editorial role, or commensurate
  • Solid understanding of educational markets, project financials and editorial process
  • Signed, published, and launched at least 8 successful revisions, including at least 1 core and/or complex product

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Drive revenue through product acquisitions and product strategies:

  • Develop competitive strategies for product line growth
  • Define and propose new products and improve/enhance existing products to increase market share
  • Develop strategic plans for each assigned course/market, identify market needs and products that fill them, and conduct due diligence to determine projected revenue and costs to ensure continued growth and profitability
  • Undertake revisions, after considering viability, that extend product strengths, address weaknesses, respond to market needs and publish on optimal but realistic cycles

Serve as Market Champion:

  • Uncover teaching/learning challenges and other emerging market needs, and monitor and draw lessons from market response to existing products through activities such as interactions with educators/customers/sales, campus and conference travel, and market research
  • Monitor competitive strategies and projects
  • Conceive, devise, and test product features and innovations that will address customer challenges
  • Create and maintain a network of contacts, a talent pool of potential authors, contributors, reviewers, and content experts

Author Management:

  • Recruit and sign authors and subject matter experts
  • Determine, manage, and enforce contractual terms including stepping into project management when necessary
  • Guide authors to articulate and achieve a viable product vision and create a competitive product by encouraging their best work and helping them interpret customer needs
  • Manage author succession plans when necessary

Project Management:

  • Establish sound, market-based editorial plans

Rowman & Littlefield is seeking an entry-level Assistant Acquisitions Editor for its Lexington Books imprint. The Assistant Acquisitions Editor will work closely with more senior Acquisitions Editors to acquire scholarly monographs and prepare them to go into production. This position is based in our headquarters in Lanham, MD.

Responsibilities
