Job Description

Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by screening pap and non-GYN tests as requested in physician orders. Performs and triages accurate tests as prescribed by the physician in a timely manner so clinicians receive accurate result enabling them to provide the best possible care.

Job Responsibility

  • Prepares non-GYN and GYN specimens for evaluation by following established protocols; ensures specimen integrity throughout the process; attends fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures when necessary.
  • Utilizing a microscope, screens slides manually and by using automated instrumentation, which requires fine motor coordination and manual dexterity; identifies cellular changes caused by the disease process; provides diagnosis and triages slides for further review as necessary.
  • Screens non-GYN slides to provide a primary diagnosis and triage slides and findings to pathologist for final diagnosis and sign out.
  • Troubleshoots test anomalies and system problems in a logical manner to ensure accurate tests.
  • Performs quality control checks and equipment maintenance, adhering to high quality standards.
  • Responds to supply and equipment issues timely to ensure optimum operations and equipment quality and long-term equipment maintenance and life; reviews supplies inventory, communicates supply needs and rotates supplies when new stocking is received.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment presenting a professional impression of facilities and fostering our culture of safety.
  • Reviews and sign-outs quality control and patient results into the electronic medical records system in a timely manner so clinicians and patients get their results as quickly as possible; expedites results to pathologists for stat and rush cases.
  • Takes status and result requests and other questions from patients and clinicians in a timely and professional manner.

Job Qualification

We are seeking a Full Time Laboratory Technician/Technologist for our multi-specialty medical Group.

General Summary:

Under general supervision of Laboratory Director and supervisors, performs and/or assists in performing all assigned qualitative and quantitative routine and special analyses of blood (e.g., red and white cell counts, differential smear counts, hematocrit testing) on blood specimens, smears and urinary specimens and/or exudates specimens, in hematology, chemistry, serology, and procedures, to aid in treatment of injury or disease. Must validate and verify all testing per quality assurance/CQI standards; reports abnormal variations to supervisors. May accession patient specimens in accordance with established clinical protocols. Receives, labels and processes specimens, entering or verifying registration of requisite data in section computerized system. Sets up, adjusts, and operates all section equipment. Follows daily maintenance and quality assurance/CQI procedures in accordance with established institutional and regulatory protocols. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and general working area, stocking clinical supplies. Ensures proper equipment operation, reporting problems to supervisors. Provides support to patient areas serving all age groups via clinical testing of patient specimens in accordance with quality assurance guidelines and set procedures.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities (Competencies):

  • Under supervision of supervisor, performs and/or assists in performing all assigned qualitative and quantitative routine and special analyses of patient specimens potentially inclusive of, but not limited to, red/white cell counts, differential smear counts, hemoglobin determinations sedimentations rates; quantitative of clotting factors/coagulation testing and cellular urinary sediment analysis in accordance with established section policies and procedures to provide diagnostic data for medical evaluation. Sorts, spins and separates specimens for analysis. Also performs tests in chemistry, serology, and immunology. Completes all required documentation and performs all required quality assurance/CQI procedures. Logs, enters, verifies and validates all requisite data in computerized clinical system/manual records. Records and reports abnormal findings (“panic values”) to supervisor(s) and respective clinical units.
  • Under supervision of supervisor, may receive, label and process patient specimens, entering requisite information into section computerized system in accordance with established procedures. Completes all documentation and logs all information in accordance with set procedures. Collects specimens by venipuncture or other means as required.
  • Performs ongoing daily quality assurance/CQI functions in accordance with established policies and procedures to ensure safety/environmental/infection control and compliance with accreditation/regulatory guidelines used for cell counting; prepares blood samples/smears issued for clinical hematology and coagulation proficiency testing. Prepares reagents and solutions following procedural guidelines.
  • Provides support functions maintaining work area quality; maintains files and statistics. May answer telephones for area and record messages. Maintains clean work station and equipment and maintains stock of clinical supplies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required as professional technologist.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Required the NY state Medical Technologist/ technician licenses.
  • Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with clinical techniques. Should be familiar with most major models of laboratory equipment. New technologists require period of 30 days in order to orient themselves to techniques and work area. Must be able to rotate through all sections.
  • Good interpersonal manner important during delivery of patient support in order to ensure harmonious provision of testing services. Must respond appropriately to inquiries from relevant clinicians.
  • Work requires manual dexterity for use of computer keyboard and computerized equipment. Light lifting of clinical supplies may be required. Adequate physical control necessary when required to perform venipuncture.

Working Conditions:

  • Incumbents work under clinical conditions, which involve exposure to blood and body fluids, demonstrated biohazardous substances. Incumbents required to wear requisite protective equipment during specimen handling/processing. Potential exposure to low-level radioactive materials, toxic materials.

  • Dissect and process resected tissue and biopsy specimens (simple or complex).
  • Dictate gross descriptions
  • Select representative diagnostic tissue for histologic processing
  • Assist attending pathologists with intra-operative consultations, including gross dissection and frozen section preparation
  • Take tissue samples as appropriate for special clinical studies, including flowcytometry, cytogenetics, electron microscopy etc.
  • For autopsies, will assist in the preparation and performance of human postmortem exam and dissection and submission of samples

We require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or graduate of an ASCP accredited Training Program for a Pathologists Assistant.
  • NYS licensed as a Pathology Assistant.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all tissue pathology and grossing procedures.
