We are currently seeking a Mid-level Geologist/ Environmental Scientist in Boston to support a wide variety of environmental projects. The preferred candidate will have extensive field and office experience working at Superfund and other contaminated sites (including Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) sites), as a task manager leading complex field programs, preparing planning documents and preparing reports for environmental characterization and remediation projects. As a member of this team, you would contribute to CDM Smith's mission by:

  • Performing surface and subsurface soil sampling, rock classification, monitoring well installation, oversight of drilling contractors, groundwater sampling, and hydraulic testing to support environmental projects.
  • Performing geologic evaluations, and/or hydrogeological investigations; describing geologic conditions, and preparing logs, contour plots and cross-section diagrams.
  • Support National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit projects including; perform and coordinated monthly and quarterly storm-water sampling, outfall inspections, report preparation.
  • Reviewing draft assessments and calculations with respect to federal, state and local regulations.
  • Working on a variety of assignments, which may include work plans, field studies, research investigations, data interpretation and evaluation, and report preparation.
  • Ensuring that firm policies and practices are followed on all assessments.
  • Independently evaluating, selecting, and applying standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Using professional judgment and knowledge of principles/techniques in making minor adaptations and modifications.

Minimum Qualifications

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct routine data collection, analysis, and reporting using approved standard procedures appropriate for this discipline.
  • Data collection will include the delineation of natural resources (e.g., wetlands, streams, and wildlife habitat) using standard industry protocols; collection and management of field data (e.g., use of GPS, GIS, digital data forms, soil boring logs, water sampling data sheets, etc.); and synthesis of the data into our standard reporting deliverables.

The Environmental Scientist supports Authority staff to ensure that the Authority meets its environmental regulatory obligations and licensing commitments in a sound and cost-efficient manner. The incumbent ensures coordination of all attributes of environmental compliance associated with Authority projects at SENY sites while having the physical ability to work in an industrial setting. Some examples of environmental obligations include sampling and monitoring and reporting of stormwater and process wastewater under the SPDES permit, NYCDEP industrial wastewater directive monitoring and reporting, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) and Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) Programs, Major Oil Storage Facility License, Chemical and Bulk Storage Program (PCB and CBS), Suffolk County POTW and Toxic and Hazardous Materials reporting, HAZWOPER, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous, universal, used oil and solid waste, DOT transportation standards, pesticide, Cooling Tower Maintenance Program and Plan along with other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Document regulatory requirements and manage the process of informing outside audiences (including agency personnel, landowners, government officials) of the Authority’s work and the conclusions drawn therefrom.
  • Develop scopes of services, review bid proposals, evaluate the suitability of proposed vendors and participate in contract negotiations for a broad suite of environmental services; maintain current Trustee approvals; provide quality assurance oversight of vendor services through feedback from other departments.
  • Review and interpret State and Federal Regulations in the areas of responsibility that may affect Authority operations including the preparation of applications to attain/maintain the permits for compliant operation under all applicable regulations and statutes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, Biological Science, Environmental Science or comparable field.

  • An advanced degree and/or Professional Certification in a related field, is preferred.
  • Experience in a variety of utility industry issues, FERC licensing, transmission line siting, utility ROW vegetation management and environmental permitting with particular expertise in one or more specific environmental area.
