Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Environmental Planner 1, we'll count on you to:

The Environmental Planner will be counted on to:

  • Work with multi-disciplinary project teams during the project development phase of transportation projects and for siting studies, land use and transportation plans, alternatives analysis, impact assessments, and regulatory approvals.
  • Support the preparation of categorical exclusions, environmental assessments, environmental impact studies and other technical reports
  • Prepare, plan and analyze/review technical studies, permit applications, NEPA documents, and similar reports/documents
  • Effectively manage the scope, schedule, and budget of tasks.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data which may include research (demographic, socioeconomic, land use), interviews, map reviews, field investigations and summarize it in written format and in tables, charts and maps.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental mitigation commitments
  • Prepare concise readable documentation for public consumption.
  • Contribute to the development of stakeholder and public involvement plans.
  • Assist in preparation for and participate in workshops, charettes, public information meetings and hearings
  • Support the development of HDR’s Transportation and Environmental Planning practice in New York by contributing to proposal efforts and other business development activities.

Required Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science or closely related field.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply federal, state, and local planning and environmental regulations in the transportation planning field.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills.

  • Ten plus years of environmental related experience, or a minimum of seven years of environmental planning in a professional services company or department of transportation.
  • A degree in environmental sciences or planning (regional, urban, ecological, recreational, etc.) is always good but we value diversity so a degree in any field related to environmental planning works well for our team.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), implementing regulations, and other relevant federal environmental laws (e.g., Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Clean Water Act, etc.)
  • Strong written communication skills are critical in this position—we are looking for demonstrated success “telling a story,” presenting information in a logical progression, and conveying complete thoughts effectively. We’ll want to see writing samples.
  • Must live/work in Utah, available to travel within Utah, and must be open to occasional travel within the continental U.S.

Your Impact

  • Contribute to environmental assessment projects
  • Write technical reports and chapters for reports, summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, environmental science, urban studies or transportation planning or a related field.

  • Familiarity with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and Esri ArcGIS
  • Proficient interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
