The Biostatistician I is responsible for providing statistical support, including study design, sample size and protocol development in support of clinical projects. Requirements:

Biostatistician
In this Biostatistician role, your responsibilities will vary based on collaborations. As a member of a research team with modest supervision, you will apply complex data management and a variety of intermediate and advanced statistical techniques and technical skills to promote the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data arising from research studies in an academic research program.

Job description: Biostatistician & Data Science Analyst I

The HSS Biostatistics Core provides comprehensive methodologic and analytic support to clinicians and basic scientists at Hospital for Special Surgery, in the area of musculoskeletal research. Under the direction of the Core Director, this analyst will provide study design and statistical analysis support for a variety of projects for the HSS Department of Medicine, a nationally and internationally recognized center for leading-edge musculoskeletal and rheumatologic care and research.


This role will contribute to the advancement of research with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, engineers, and other statisticians to leverage unique healthcare data (in the form of medical images, clinical data, and beyond) and implementing appropriate study design, evaluation tools, and methods associated with various research projects. Additionally, this position will collaborate and advise faculty on the most appropriate statistical methods to apply to research design and outcomes analysis.
The analyst will also be responsible for helping to execute the Department’s Machine Learning strategy with the mission of creating new and improved methods for assessing and predicting disease outcomes and biology at Hospital for Special Surgery. The analyst will have opportunities for authorship on publications stemming from his/her work and will play a key role in producing and sharing the results the broader scientific community.


Essential Tasks/Responsibilities:

  • Assist in protocol development by implementing proper study design methodology, performing sample size and power calculations, and generating randomization schedules.
  • Make recommendations for appropriate statistical analyses and design to investigators and study team.
  • Perform statistical queries, analyses, and evaluation as assigned through the Biostatistics Core.
  • Develop robust algorithms and techniques using image analytics and deep learning across a variety of large and diverse medical image datasets for the purpose of developing ML models.
  • Responsible for accuracy and timeliness of summary reports, tables, and figures to investigators and study team.
  • Collaborate on grants, presentations and manuscripts submitted for publication, including writing methods sections and analysis plans for incorporation into protocol and grant submissions.
  • Contribute to teaching biostatistical methodology to medical students, residents, fellows, and other Hospital staff.
  • Stay informed of statistical techniques as applied to musculoskeletal research issues by reading journals and/or attending courses/programming meetings.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Core by suggesting changes or improvements to existing analytic code, study design protocols, and any proposed analytic methods.


Education/Experience

  • Master's Degree in related field of epidemiology or biostatistics.
  • 1-2 years required (1-3 years preferred) of biostatistical consulting experience, either within the academic curriculum or as part of a consulting service unit.
  • Background in Machine Learning techniques and practical experience in evaluating the performance of ML algorithms on test and real clinical data.
  • Experience in musculoskeletal research is preferred.


Competencies

  • SAS is the preferred statistical package within the HSS Biostatistics Core, but candidates with experience in other statistical packages (R, SPSS, Stata, Python) are encouraged to apply.
  • Intermediate proficiency in data preparation, machine learning and/or data science, descriptive analyses, comparative statistics, and advanced statistical modeling.
  • Possess the ability to facilitate the flow of information through effective written and oral communication.
